What would Labor Day be without a workforce? Even though I am currently retired, I was a proud member of that workforce both as a graphic artist and then as an educator. It would be great if everyone loved their job, but I know it is not always that easy or simple. Regardless, I feel it is important to appreciate those who contribute to our society through the work that they do each day. This chalk art project is designed to say “thank you” for your labor!
I was particularly pleased to have my youngest son, Nicholas, volunteer to bicycle out with me and help me get started. I also enjoyed help from members of the Dietel family who were using the Kiwanis Park in Battle Ground for their annual family picnic. My close friend Laura Schroeder told me about her family event as she thought it might inspire participation from some of the younger and creative members. I found lots of good help from Sayrn, Mila and Lilly. I even had help from Avi, a very young member of the Dietel clan. At about two years old it was a challenge to keep her engaged and productive to the artistic plan. Thanks to her older cousins, she was kept busy with her own chalk “side” projects.
A special thanks and shout out to my long-time friend, Janice Choy who traveled from Portland to join us. Then, my sister-in-law Jill Winters came with her friend, Elizabeth and her daughter Evie. Evie brought her friend, Cami. I was pleasantly surprised and grateful for all their help and energy. I really did not expect people to travel so far to participate, but I was very happy they did!
Enjoy the slideshow of our work. Mark your calendars for the next chalk art date: Sunday September 26th at Salmon Creek Regional Park/Klineline Pond in Vancouver, WA. More details about this event will be posted on Facebook events page.
